What is Fraud?

Fraud according to Webster’s Dictionary is “An act of deceiving or misrepresenting: Trick.”

In business, fraud can take place in a number of ways and can result in the lost of significant revenue.  One method in which a business can be defrauded is through sales.  A sales based business affords dishonest individuals an environment in which they can trick the business into selling their goods and/or services without the intention of paying the business in return.

Businesses accepting credit cards as form of payment are more susceptible to being defrauded then those that simply accept cash or wire transfers.  Businesses, in turn, who accept credit cards in a “card-not-present” environment (web transactions, mail order and telephone orders) incur a greater risk of fraud occurrences.

“incidence of fraud for credit card transactions taking place over the internet is,

according to Gartner G2, nearly 15 times higher than for face-to-face transactions,

or 1.06% of the overall dollar volume.  Compared to the traditional card-not-present channels, mail order and telephone orders, the risk of fraud is probably two to three

times higher for internet-based transactions.”

transactions, 0.36% Mail or Telephone orders and 1.14% Internet based orders.”
