New voice of the CIO

On 10 September, IBM released its first Global CIO Study, The New Voice of the CIO.
This study, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind, expands on
the understanding that the role of the Chief Information Officer has
changed from utility manager to strategic business leader and that,
across the executive suite, business leaders understand that CIOs are a
driving force behind the technologies that drive the business.

With CIOs a major target audience for IBM products and
services, it is critical to understand their wants and needs,
especially as their roles evolve.
By studying this audience
directly, we can better understand the effects of the changing business
and economic environment, and what it takes to succeed as a CIO. IBMers
met face-to-face with over 2,500 CIOs from 78 countries, 19 industries
and organizations of every size.

The New Voice of the CIO synthesizes these conversations into an
exploration of how successful CIOs blend three pairs of roles that seem
contradictory, but are actually complementary. Successful CIOs are
effective at:

  • Making innovation real by being an insightful visionary and an able pragmatist
  • Raising the return on investment of IT as a savvy value creator and a relentless cost cutter
  • Expanding effects on business that require skills as a collaborative IT leader and an inspiring IT manager

The study identifies these complementary roles as nearly universal
for CIOs. Depending on their individual business priorities and future
vision, their emphasis on each characteristic will vary. Understanding
the full spectrum, they will be able to tune to context and better
align IT and business. This alignment has been the fundamental tenet of
IBM’s own business transformation and IT organization for many years.

Six weeks ago Pat Toole was
named Vice President and CIO for IBM. According to Pat, "The study
comes at a perfect time. As a new CIO, I can benefit from the insight
of 2,500 of my peers. This study will also be a great conversation-
starter with our clients and offer ideas to help them be more effective
change-agents in their own organizations."
